Meeting last week, March 5 - Student of the month and 4-way speech test
Last Wednesday, March 5, members of the Kutztown Rotary Club celebrated the Student of the Month ceremony. One student from each of Kutztown Area High School and Brandywine Heights Area High School is selected by school administrators each month throughout the school year for this award based collectively on academic achievement, school participation, and community contributions. Pictures below show Benjamin and Alyssa, the students from Brandywine who were celebrated for January and for March. The student from Kutztown was unable to attend and will join in a ceremony later in the year.
Both Benjamin and Alyssa addressed the club members at the Ceremony where they demonstrated qualities of exemplary students. The ceremony normally occurs during the Kutztown Rotary meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at the Kutztown Tavern, where the weekly meetings for the club generally take place.
In addition, we also celebrated the student 4-way test speech competition.
The 4-Way Speech Contest was developed by Rotarians to promote critical thinking and ethical decision making among high school students. The contest encourages students to develop speaking and leadership skills to influence others on a topic for which they are passionate. The contestants create a speech 5-7 minutes in length addressing an ethical problem of their choice using the principles of the 4-Way Test. These principles must be an integral part of the speech and students are judged based on content, organization, and delivery.
Our exchange student, Leander, and this year's Berk's County Alternate Dairy Princess, Brinley, competed in the contest. Brinley was the winner for this competition will move on to the Regional contest, possibly followed by competition at the District level. Cash prizes are awarded at all levels.
Kutztown Rotary Club will celebrate a 100-year anniversary in April of 2026 and so is celebrating the whole year of 2026!
To kick things off, we are starting our
Centennial Service Campaign - Celebrating Rotary's 7 Areas of Focus (April, Environmental Service) with a NexTrex challenge recycling program. Follow this link to see what type of plastics to start saving. We will update with drop off instructions soon!
