4-Way Speech Contest

On Wednesday, March 15, the Kutztown Rotary Club celebrated its 4-Way Speech Contest.

The 4-Way Test is a well-quoted statement of business ethics developed by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 and later adopted by Rotary in 1943. It is used universally as a guide by employees to make business decisions by asking 4 simple questions:
  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all involved?
The 4-Way Speech Contest was developed by Rotarians to promote critical thinking and ethical decision making among high school students. The contest encourages students to develop speaking and leadership skills to influence others on a topic for which they are passionate. The contestants create a speech 5-7 minutes in length addressing an ethical problem of their choice using the principles of the 4-Way Test. These principles must be an integral part of the speech and students are judged based on content, organization, and delivery.

The winner for this competition will move on to the Regional contest and then regional contestants will compete at the District level at the District Conference on May 6th in Atlantic City. Cash prizes are awarded at all levels.

Stories
Congrats to the new participants of Rotary Leadership Institute
Members of the Kutztown Rotary Club attended Rotary Leadership Training, level I, on March 25. The Rotary Leadership Institute offers a leadership development program in three full day sessions (Parts I, II and III). The courses are designed to provide Rotary knowledge and to develop leadership skills for voluntary organizations. Shown below are members Alex Meynardi, Mana Kieke, Soni Diaz, and Jim Springer, who all attended the training and Bob Hobaugh, who was one of the trainers for the day.
Cancer Support
On Wednesday, March 22, Jen Gibbs from The Cancer Support Community Organization came to speak with the club members about all of the wonderful services they provide for cancer patients in the community. She also gave us an overview of the Dragon Boat Festival Fundraiser that they will be running on June 17, 2023. Visit this website for more details on the work they do and on the Festival. The Rotary Club plans to participate in this fun event for a good cause. Come to a meeting to see how you can join us in fun events like these.

Students of the Month for March 2023
Each month the Kutztown Rotary Club recognizes one outstanding student each from Kutztown Area High School and Brandywine Heights High School. These students are selected by their school administrators and are often picked for significant improvement or overcoming challenges, accomplishments in academics, school participation, and community contributions. These students never fail to impress Rotarians with their positive impact on our community.

This month, the student from Brandywine Heights Area High School was Caleb Moyer and from Kutztown Area High School was William Randall. Congratulations to you both! Please look for the student of the month article in the BerksMont News.

When Not at Work - Members at Play
Along with serving the community, members of the Kutztown Rotary Club like to be social. We do a social hour meeting every third Wednesday of the month, we have movie club meetings at area venues, and enjoy many other social activities.

A highlight of March was a movie group outing to Setter Ridge to celebrate Tom's birthday and hear our own Marie DeFilipps perform (see photos below). Marie did a great job, and we will be also supporting her next month at Saucony Creek on April 15. We are also planning on doing social night there on April 19.

Come join our meetings to find out how we do good and have fun!
